Mary is the Librarian in Mineral Town and is the daughter of Basil & Anna. She is shy and not as out-going as the other girls. Not alot of people who play the game like to marry her. But if you do, you won't be disappointed. Once she gets to know you she opens up more and is a really interesting character. With her Dad, Basil, who studies plants, Mary likes lots of the wild items that grow in the mountains every season so finding gifts for her is not hard at all. If you like the quiet, shy types, then Mary is your girl.
This is how Mary reacts to all different kind of gifts, the more she likes the gift the faster the heart rises, the more she hates a gift the faster a heart drops.

Basic Strategy: There are items Mary likes in Spring, Summer and Fall. In spring give her Bamboo [These grow near the hotsprings], In summer, give her Red Grass. [One grows near the hot springs, the other by Gotz's house. And in Fall, she likes Mushrooms, even Poison Mushrooms. [These are abundant in fall. 2 near Gotz place. 1 by hot springs, 1 up in the mountains just across the bridge.] In Winter however, there are no items. So what I did was, made sure I got the 1st house upgrade by mid fall. Then each day hoarded all the mushrooms into the fridge, and made sure I had 30+ so I had enough to give her 1 each day. Following this you should have her to a Red Heart by late Fall or early Winter.

Special Events:
Black heart- Walk in the library and she will be writing something facing the front desk. Ask her what she's writing and she will be glad you asked. And her affection towards you will raise.
Purple Heart- Walk in the library one day when its open and Mary will ask what you need today. Tell her you want to read a book and it will make her happy, and once again, her affection level will raise.
Blue Heart- Mary will come to your house around 2pm and give you a book called "The Woodcutter & The King" make sure to read it by going to your rucksack page and pressing Triangle... Eventually she will come back, or the next time you go to the library, and ask you a question about the book. She asks wether you liked the Woodcutter or the King better. If you answer "The Woodcutter" it will raise her affection. After the event is over she will take the book back.
Post- Marriage: One day if you go to the Library on a day when its open. You will walk inside and Mary will be writing something at the front desk and mumbling to herself, mentioning you name. If you go talk to her she will say you surprised her. She then tells you she is writing a novel with you as the main character, because she finds it easier to write about things and people she is familiar with. I triggered this the very next day after the wedding, Sunday, Spring 7th at 1pm
