As in all Harvest Moon games, you cannot purchase poultry or livestock unless
you have built an appropriate shelter for them. In the DS game, buildings can
be fashioned of a number of different materials ranging from Fodder, to Wood,
to Stone, to Golden Lumber. The price will vary according to the material
chosen. The strongest buildings are the most expensive, as one might imagine.
Gotz is the builder here as well as in Mineral Town. Ring him on the
telephone to order any upgrades to your house or new buildings. There is a
section in this guide that gives all prices for building construction and upgrades.
Your choice of material for any building will determine its durability and
strength. If you are familiar with the old nursery tale of the 'Three Little
Pigs', you will be well aware of the dangers of building a house from straw.
Grass is no better! A building made of grass will collapse during a storm and
may even collapse in fine weather. Lumber is stronger than Grass but Stone is
better than both. Unfortunately, you may not be able to afford to order Stone
buildings at the beginning of your life in Forget-Me-Not Valley. If you can
afford it, I would recommend that you choose to build with Wood rather than
Grass, and then demolish the buildings and construct stronger buildings from
Stone later in the game.
As in Magical Melody, you can choose where to locate any building that you
order from Gotz. This game differs in this respect from FoMT/MFoMT where the
location of your Chicken Coop and Barn automatically are chosen for you. As in
Magical Melody, you can demolish a building if you decide you would rather
relocate it to another spot. The difference here is that you cannot build on
any field apart from your own field, although you can plant crops and trees on
any field in the Valley.
As in other Harvest Moon games, you can collect your own materials or purchase
them from Gotz. If you gather your own materials, the cost of building will be
far less. It does take a great deal of time and energy to collect sufficient
materials to build anything, however. Unlike other Harvest Moon games, you
will not have a place to store your materials at the start of the game.
Although your rucksack is substantially larger than the rucksacks in FoMT/MFoMT
and you can store up to 99 of any item in a single slot, you may wish to order
storage buildings from Gotz. You can order a Silo for Fodder, as well as Sheds
for your Wood, Stone and Golden Lumber.
In Harvest Moon DS you actually must convert raw material into building
material before it can be used. Cutting grass with your Scythe, as in
FoMT/MFoMT and other HM games, creates Fodder or Grass. Chopping branches or
stumps with your Axe creates Wood for building. Smashing rocks or boulders
with your Hammer creates Stone for building.
Construction for any building begins the day after you make your order. When
purchased from Gotz, each piece of Wood Lumber costs 50G, each piece of
Material Stone costs 200G and each piece of Golden Lumber costs 100,000G. You
therefore can save quite a lot of money if you provide the materials yourself.
Incidentally, you will not be able to expand your House for the first time
until you have the Round Table from the Shopping Network. In order to expand
your house a second time, you need to have ordered the Refrigerator from the
Shopping Channel.
